Forward, Book 5 of The Eventing Series, is now available!

Today is the release day for Forward, Book 5 of The Eventing Series. It feels so right to be bringing this book to you right after the wonderful Kentucky Three-Day Event weekend. To spend the whole weekend immersed in the very best of our sport, and then to share a story about striving to reach the top of Eventing, is the pinnacle of writing equestrian fiction (for me, anyway!).

Forward continues where Luck left off — like the other books in this series, I’ve enjoyed writing them as a serial, without gaps in the action between novels. It’s now late spring in north-central Florida, and the sun is hot, the arenas are dry, and the show season is winding down… or is it? There’s a lot to prep for and everything to play for this summer! The Eventing Series

Forward is available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and paperback here. If your library has a request program, you can also request they add it to their collection!

If you’re new to the series or looking for new equestrian fiction in your life, start with Ambition, Book 1 of The Eventing Series. This month I’ve also created an updated, revised edition of Ambition. You can find it on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, paperback, audiobook and Audible here.

All of my equestrian fiction novels can be accessed at my Amazon page, here.

Before you start reading, I have a request. Please share the word about Forward and your other favorite equestrian fiction books! It is truly amazing (and it can be a little disheartening) to find out how many people don’t know there are new, authentic equestrian stories available to read. Publishers and industry magazines keep putting out lists of “great horse stories” which are just rehashes of The Saddle Club, Thoroughbred, and Black Beauty lists we’ve all been seeing since we were kids. But we all know equestrian fiction has changed with the times!

Please add Forward on Goodreads and leave a review or rating, review Forward on Amazon, and share the news with your friends! I’d love it if you share this Facebook post with your friends and equestrian groups, too.

Adding, reviewing, and sharing are three easy steps that help all of your favorite authors continue to reach new readers — and that’s what gives us the encouragement and the financial ability to write more books for you!

Thanks for everything, and happy reading! I’m going to get busy on a new novel now!

Announcing Forward, Book 5 of The Eventing Series

I have great news to begin April 2019! The newest installment in The Eventing Series, Forward, is publishing on April 30 — and you can pre-order your copy now.

Forward: Book 5 of The Eventing Series

Forward: Book 5 of The Eventing Series

Here’s the story: at the end of Luck, we saw Jules and Pete settling into a new life at Alachua Eventing Co-op, where Jules will be the manager and head riding instructor. It’s not exactly what she expected out of her career, but things are going fine, and it’s better than living in a horse trailer, right?

The cracks begin to show as the eventing season winds up and summer sets in across Florida. Pete’s new horse has an overbearing owner who is pressuring him into pushing the horse too fast. Dynamo suddenly seems to be showing his age on the cross-country course. And how on earth is Jules supposed to manage a barn, a dozen kids, and her own competition schedule?

She’ll need some help from old friends — and maybe some old enemies, too — but Jules is going to keep moving forward, no matter what. From the pine plantations of north Florida to the skyscraper shadows of the Central Park Horse Show, Forward is all about chasing dreams, wherever they may lead.

I am extremely excited about this book, which brings together a cast of characters I had a lot of fun developing, and tells a story I think is a natural next step for Jules and Pete. I really think you’re going to like it.

Scenes From the First Draft of Ambition

A few weeks ago I uncovered the first chapter of the first draft of what would become Ambition. I was struck by a few things: one, that Jules was so self-centered it literally slowed the narrative down while Jules breathlessly described herself and her experience as a trainer. And two, that same breathless look, I can do this trainer thing! remained the core value of early Jules in the Eventing Series.

Now, as I poke around the edges of a fifth book in the Eventing Series, it’s interesting to look back at the way Jules was desperate to hide her lack of actual experience beneath a veil of completely unwarranted confidence. Things have changed for Jules–if you’ve read the four books currently out there in the world, you can see she’s been growing as a human as well as a trainer. And yet what lurks in the background of a trainer not yet twenty-five, especially now when she’s faced with so many clients and owners who have every right to question her every move with their horses and their children?

So yes, I was pretty delighted to find what I think is the complete first draft. It’s called Such a Clever Trainer. The last edit was April 26, 2011. This is as close to a time capsule as anything I own. It’s only 66 pages, about 38,000 words, and a lot of it is longish scenes with asterisks dividing them. This was my attempt to write pivotal scenes first. I didn’t love the process.

I’m not sure how much of this actually made it into the finished version of Ambition. Quite a lot, I think, and yet I think in very different context.  In this version, Jules meets Pete at the first hunter pace she takes Mickey to, at Lochloosa–yes, halfway through the book!

I brought Pete back to the introduction of Ambition after doing some reading on romance construction and realizing that you simply couldn’t have a romantic interest show up 150 pages into a book. I am not big on “the craft of writing” as a form of study, preferring to tell a story the way it feels right to me, but this seemed like a pretty sensible rule. Pete becomes a goal and an antagonist to goad Jules along throughout the book–and of course, there’s the hurricane scene, which is still probably my favorite thing I’ve ever written.

Amazingly, that scene is in this version, missing a few key players–like Marcus, Jules’ beagle, who doesn’t exist at all yet.

Read more about this draft and its inspiration, plus the Lochloosa Hunter Pace chapter, at my Patreon page. Please comment with your thoughts and let me know what you’d like to read next!

News on Luck (Book 4 of the Eventing Series) and new short stories

Happy 2018, everyone!

Luck: Book 4 of The Eventing Series

Luck: Book 4 of The Eventing Series

We’re already zipping through January, and it’s been a cold one for many of us here in the US – perfect reading weather, if you ask me. And a lot of readers agree, because LUCK was released this month to my strongest book release sales yet.

The reviews for LUCK are absolutely fantastic, and as always reassure me that yes, people still want to read about my characters and yes, I should write more about them. So, while I do have other projects I’m working on in the background, I am going to prioritize, once again, another equestrian novel.

I haven’t decided one hundred percent which characters this book will revolve around, but I think it’s going to be focused on Grace, the star of SHOW BARN BLUES, who of course is also a big player in several other novels.

It’s really become clear to me that I need some sort of over arching series/numbering convention above and beyond the individual Alex and Alexander Series, and Eventing Series. I am probably going to introduce a structure as the Florida Horse Country Series, with numbering to help people read the books in order, jumping from series to series as they see fit.

If that is the case it will go something like:

  1. The Head and Not The Heart
  2. Other People’s Horses
  3. Claiming Christmas
  4. Ambition
  5. Turning for Home
  6. Show Barn Blues
  7. Pride
  8. Courage
  9. Luck

Please note the paperback version of LUCK is delayed due to a simple lack of production time. However, if you would like to download a Kindle edition now, just email me a copy of your Amazon receipt and I’ll send you a $5 CreateSpace coupon code when LUCK is released in paperback. That way you’re not buying it twice.

New Short Stories & Unpublished Writing

I’ve been puzzling over the best way to get more writing released, more quickly to readers who really want it. Obviously I want my novels to be fully-realized before they are published, and that means several rewrites, editing, etc. before they can be made available to the general public. While I know there are plenty of readers who would happily read everything the moment I write it, I have to be conscious of new readers on Amazon who expect a polished, finished product. And of course, that’s what publishing a novel is all about.

So for the readers who really want more, whether it’s polished or not, I’ve decided to start a Patreon community. If you’re not familiar with Patreon, it’s a web platform which allows creatives from writers to musicians create a subscription-based community for fans. Starting at $1 per month, I’ll be sharing at least one short story or other unpublished work from my piles of notebooks, along with other perks for my Patrons.

We’ll also have a better opportunity to talk about books, horses and life than blogs or Facebook currently provide us with. Social media has become a very toxic place over the past few years, and I haven’t been eager to open up my pages to constant trolls every time I express an opinion or want to have a conversation about issues affecting the equestrian community. At Patreon, we can share our thoughts and work towards solving problems in a respectful, private forum… which I am really excited about!

There will also be new chapters of my new novels as I write them, opportunities to collaborate, decide on character names and plot twists, and so forth. I really want this to be a community where we can have conversations about books and horses… the things that really matter in life!

Take a look at my Patreon page, where I’ve already published a new piece of flash fiction unlike anything I’ve written before, and maybe consider joining the party. We are going to have a lot of fun. And who knows? We might change the world.

Luck: Book 4 of the Eventing Series

It’s time for Book 4 of the Eventing Series! While Ambition, the first book, is still racking up week upon week as one of the best-selling horse books on Amazon, I’ve been getting book 4 together for readers. Why else would I do with my holiday break?

Luck Kindle Cover

The cover of Luck is a departure from the rest of the series, which all feature the faces of horses. But I think if you look carefully, you’ll see why this cover is absolutely perfect for the title.

Oh, what’s it about? Well, I find it hard to write a synopsis for a book this deep into the series. I don’t want new readers to stumble onto this blog post or read the blurb on Amazon and think, “spoiler alert!” every single time. So I’ve tried to keep it a little vague. Here’s what I wrote for the new release:

Jules is used to starting over. With her horses, her dreams, and Pete by her side, they’re making a new go of eventing life in an unlikely setting. After years of riding for trainers and owners, their isolated little farm feels like a luxury to her. Unfortunately, not everyone in the business agrees that less is more. Jules has never thought of herself as lucky, but now she’ll need all the luck — and hard work — in the world to hang on to the horses she loves.

Does that give away too much? Not enough? It’s hard to say. There’s a lot of drama surrounding Mickey, and Jules finds herself making money in a way she swore she never would, and there are a few dashes of Grace and Alex in the mix as well.

Basically, if you’ve read Ambition, Pride and Courage, you’re going to want to catch up with everyone on a quick re-read, and read Luck next!

Luck is available for pre-order through Jan. 11, 2018 in the Amazon Kindle Store. Pre-orders will download to your Kindle or Kindle app for your smartphone, tablet or computer on Jan. 12, 2018. That’s also the date you can begin reading Luck for free with Kindle Unlimited!

Waiting of the paperback? I agree, paper’s best. But you’ll have to wait just a little longer, as they also take longer to produce. I promise to update you as soon as paperbacks become available. As with all my books, when you purchase a paperback through Amazon, you’ll be able to download the Kindle edition for free.

Looking forward to Luck?

Cover Reveal: Courage, Book 3 of The Eventing Series

Are you ready for the latest update on Jules, Pete, and the horses of Briar Hill Farm? Good news – Courage is coming! I have details for you on the story-line, release date, when you can pre-order your Kindle edition, and, of course, the gorgeous cover!

Cover Reveal for Courage: Book 3 of The Eventing Series

We last saw Jules and Pete at the end of a long hard summer of apprenticeships. Pete spent the summer in England; Jules at a show barn outside of Orlando. Neither of them came back exactly the same as when they’d left, and now, they’re not sure where they stand with one another.

There’s also the looming question of who owns Briar Hill Farm, the sprawling eventing wonderland where they’ve been training under the not-so-gracious permission of Pete’s grandmother. With her sudden passing, there are legal questions about how binding her arrangement with her grandson was, leaving Pete and Jules wondering if they and their horses are on the edge of eviction. At the same time, they’re on the hook for the enormous upkeep bill of the property for the first time.

Still, there are always horses to ride, always events on the horizon. In Ocala, there’s one surefire way to make money when you’re facing insurmountable bills: racehorses. One thing though… training racehorses is not like training ex-racehorses.  And Jules isn’t so sure this galloping lark is going to work out–until she meets Alex.

From the back cover of Courage:
For three-day event rider Jules Thornton, courage means riding her horses forward through the most daunting cross-country courses in the sport. She’s already proven she’s willing to whatever it takes to make her name as an eventer, even spending the summer in an intense dressage program.

Now she’s back in Ocala and ready to tackle the winter eventing with her usual bravado, but neither she nor her partner, Pete are ready for the next struggle the eventing gods have cooked up. Their farm is locked in a legal battle, their income depends on galloping racehorses, and Amanda the Hunter Princess is way too friendly with Pete for Jules’ tastes.

This fall, Jules has to learn courage goes deeper than kicking on through sticky situations. Courage means hanging on for dear life, and knowing when to let go.

You can add Courage to your GoodReads to-read list by clicking here.
